Email response April 4 from Jess Jung to Tyler’s email about postponing the director search until next academic year: Dear Music Faculty, Thank you for expressing your concerns about the upcoming search for new leadership. We realize that the search is on a tight deadline. However, we feel confident that this task can be completed with great success to the Challey School of Music. You can rest assured that job postings for leadership positions are posted every day and that we will work diligently to make sure those qualified for this position will apply. The School is in a great place to entice and excite top leaders—solid faculty, stepping into a role that is stable and set up for success, high recruitment, exceptional donor support, and new building renovations. Leaders will be drawn to this position, despite the time of academic year. Regarding your specific concerns: Given that very few faculty and students will be on campus during the candidate interviews, how will faculty and students give adequate and meaningful feedback related to this hire? Students, faculty, and stakeholders will be welcome to join. The search committee can also consider Zoom sessions, as well as recording presentations/panels/etc., to include a wider audience for feedback. With a search so late in the academic year, how can we expect to find excellent candidates for such an important position who will be available and ready to uproot their lives on short notice? Both the National Association of Schools of Theatre and the National Association of Schools of Music stipulate in their code of ethics that the timing of faculty appointments offered after May 1 would need to be cleared with an administrative head at a candidate's current institution, representing an additional hurdle to securing an excellent candidate (exact NASM language included below this message as an example). Some of this was answered above. Regarding moving, we would be open to working with any candidate that needed more time to make this important transition. Thank you again for your feedback.
