Don't know how you all feel, but perhaps if we jointly edit down/modify to something that the largest number of us feel like signing-- I don't think any of us would want to pressure each other to participate in this (and totally understand those of you who are on the committee if it seems more strategic to abstain from a joint letter), but personally I would rather participate in a joint message than sending in my own message insofar as there are some number of others with the same interest. To that end, I've copied/pasted Kelly's material in this Google doc, which those who feel so compelled can edit-- perhaps we can put bold initials next to sentiments we would agree with including in the eventual letter, and add/modify statements as seems useful? I've put my initials by those sentiments that most closely expressed things I'd want to say, and personally speaking I'd be open to signing a letter that included some number of the thoughts I didn't initial as well-- my only thought is that while Bob and Sheila's involvement has of course already been huge over time and critical toward searches happening, I'm slightly hesitant to call for non-NDSU faculty to be involved in an administrative search... If I were Dean of CAS, what I might think of doing would be to informally discuss things with the Challeys and perhaps solicit input which I could bring to the committee for consideration, but I'm not sure how productive it would be to complain to the Dean about this-- might be someone who knows her well enough to suggest in conversation that she consider looping the Challeys into the discussion, given their importance to the university and deep involvement in the CSoM.
